A Prayer a Day for East Asian Peoples
Shoton, or the Yogurt Festival, is held annually in mid-August. The festival begins with the once-a-year unveiling of the Buddhist Thankas, giant embroidered tapestries of Buddhist statues housed at the Sara and Drepung monasteries. These tapestries cover the side of an entire building. Pilgrims rise in the middle of the night to begin walking to the monasteries to burn incense and throw khatas, ceremonial scarves, onto the Thankas. Then they make their way to a park to picnic and watch traditional Tibetan operas.
Pray the enjoyment of a summer picnic and days off from work will be redeemed from a time of worshiping idols to a time of celebrating the Most High God. Pray Tibetans will sing and give thanks to the Lord rather than look to idols. Pray Tibetans will be glad and rejoice in the Lord (Psalm 92:1-5).
